Deputy Commissioner warns against sand mafia

A woman was killed and two others injured when a sand mound caved in at Vegamadagu in Tayalur hobli under Mulbagal police limits on Friday.

The police gave the name of the victim as Sujathamma (36). Her husband Krishnappa and son Chandrashekhar were injured in the incident.

The incident occurred at around 11 a.m. when the trio reportedly engaged in extracting sand from a tank in the area for domestic purpose. “The family members had gone to bring sand for construction of the toilet at their house”, the police told The Hindu .

Mulbagal police have registered a case.

DC’s warning

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner K.V. Trilokchandra has warned that stringent action will be taken against those engaged in illegal sand mining and transportation.

He issued this warning following a threat to Kolar tahasildar Rangegowda and some other revenue officials during a raid on Wednesday night by some anti-social elements belonging to the sand mafia near Kendatti.

“Illegal sand miners and transporters will be expelled from the district border”, Mr. Trilokchandra said.

Vemagal police have arrested a couple of people and registered a case against 50 people in connection with Wednesday’s incident.
