A 35-year-old woman of Hiremasali village of Indi taluk was allegedly thrashed after being stripped on Monday evening. According to reports, the family of Moulali Mundodagi of the same village beat her up accusing the victim of having an illegal relation with Moulali Mundodagi.
It is said that the family members of Moulali Mundodagi found the victim and the former in a compromising position in the house when the family members, who were out, came home.
Later, the angry relatives stripped the woman in the house and thrashed her. The victim was later thrown out of the house without her clothes on. The woman reached home in the same state. Amid this, the woman, who was later admitted to the government hospital here, said that she has no illegal relation with the man.
She said that she had gone to seek ₹ 30,000 which she had lent the man. Instead of returning her the money, the family members thrashed her, she complained.
The woman and some local residents have accused Police Inspector of Indi Police Station Shivananda Arenad of deliberately delaying registering a case and using foul language against those who went to the station to lodge a complaint. Later, under public pressure, the case was filed on Tuesday.
The residents have demanded that the police official be removed from his post. Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Jain has said that a case has been booked against nine persons and a team has been constituted, led by Indi Circle Inspector of Police, to investigate the case. All the nine accused are absconding, he said.
It is the second such incident in the district where a woman has been beaten up.
Condemning the incident, district in-charge Minister M.B. Patil directed the police to arrest the accused immediately.
On June 4, a Muslim woman was killed.
The body was found in Talikot village of the district. According to a report, the woman, who was pregnant, was killed by her family members as she had married a Hindu man.
