Withdraw cases against farmers: MP

August 07, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 09:40 am IST - CHITRADURGA:

As farmers are the backbone of the nation, they should be treated with respect and their demands should be fulfilled on a priority basis, B.N. Chandrappa, MP, has said.

He was speaking to farmers, who were arrested in connection with the recent protest in parts of North Karnataka against the interim verdict of the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal, at the district jail here on Saturday. The MP demanded that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah take steps to withdraw the cases against farmers.

Condemning the police action against farmers and women, the MP demanded that an inquiry be conducted into the matter and action be initiated against police officers responsible for the action. “There are many areas in North Karnatata that are suffering from water scarcity. It was natural for farmers to take to the streets to express their ire over the negligence of the government and attacking them in such a cruel manner was condemnable,” he said.
