While the State government has called an all-party meeting to discuss the next course of action on the sharing of the Mahadayi waters, in Bengaluru on Sunday, a group of organisations which met here on Saturday has urged political parties to make their stand clear on the issue before taking a delegation to the Prime Minister.
A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting organised under the aegis of the Mahadayi Kalasa-Banduri Mahandolana Samiti at Karnatak Vidyavardhaka Sangha here on Saturday, where representatives of various organisations, including the Dharwad High Court Bar Association, participated.
They also decided to hold a silent dharna outside the Vidhana Soudha on Sunday during the all-party meeting.
“It will be a futile exercise if a delegation is taken to the Prime Minister seeking his intervention in the Mahadayi issue. Leaders of the Congress and the BJP should make their stand clear and pressure their national presidents to join hands to resolve the problem by persuading the ruling and Opposition leaders in Goa. Our dharna before the Vidhana Soudha will be draw the attention of the political parties to adapt a common stand on the issue,” B.D. Hiremath, president of the Dharwad High Court Bar Association, said.
The meeting also resolved to urge the State government to provide compensation to the women and elderly persons affected by the police excesses in Navalgun taluk and also to release innocent persons arrested in connection with the violent protests in Navalgund.
Basavaraj Sulibhavi, Shankar Halagatti, D.M. Hiremath, and K.G. Shanthaswamimath, among others, took part in meeting.
A memorandum containing the resolutions passed in the meeting was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad.
Meanwhile, addressing a press conference in Hubballi, conveners of the Mahadayi Kalasa-Banduri Horata Samanvaya Samiti, led by Vikas Soppin, Mahesh Pattar and others urged the State government to go for mediation by a taking delegation to meet the Prime Minister.
