The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) which is struggling to shore up its solid-waste management system, has allegedly slept over a vision document submitted more than 4 years ago.
The ‘Vision Statement for 2013 for collection, segregation, transportation and disposal of solid wastes in Mysore’ was presented at a public consultative committee meeting of the JNNURM and the MCC on July 27, 2010.
The projected 2013 scenario was envisaged by Vasanthkumar Mysoremath and a few other members of the Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) and their prognosis of the problem is turning out to be true.
The statement pointed out that door-to-door collection of wastes and transportation of nearly 400 tons of garbage every day could not be managed by the existing staff.
The document had called for augmenting the workforce to clean the city. “There is more awareness and public participation today than in the past for cleaning drives,” said Mr. Mysoremath.
The statement sought a plan of action for appointing workers, transparency and accountability in awarding contracts and legal bindings for non-adherence to contractual obligations.
Other recommendations included group health insurance for permanent pourakarmikas on the rolls of the MCC and for those on contract.
