Water board, Mandya CMC conduct survey to plug leakage

In a bid to identify and prevent the leakage of Cauvery water, the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWS&DB) and Mandya City Municipal Council (CMC) conducted a joint survey of the pipeline supplying water to the town from Srirangapatna.

The town, with 35 wards and around 1.5 lakh population, requires 30 MLD (million litres a day) water per day. Though the board is pumping around 19 MLD of Cauvery water every day, the town is getting only around 15-16 MLD because of leakages.

“Hence, we conducted the survey recently to know where the leakages were. We have now identified the spots and we will repair them immediately,” T.N. Narasimha Murthy, Commissioner, CMC, told The Hindu .

Water supply

The acute shortage of water has forced the board to supply water to the town once in three days since April 1. Therefore, the sale of purified bottled water has seen a significant increase. The board is supplying water to the parched areas in the town through two tankers, Mr. Murthy said.

The number of metered water connections in the town is around 19,000, while the number of illegal connections is around 2,000.
