The Raj Bhavan has accorded approval for conferring honorary doctorate of science (Honoris Causa) degrees of the Visvesvaraya Technological University to Padma Bhushan V.K. Aatre, a scientist and former Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister and educationist P. Shyama Raju, Chancellor of Reva University, Bengaluru.

The degrees would be conferred upon them by the Governor and Chancellor of the VTU on the occasion of the University’s 14th Annual Convocation scheduled to be held here on Saturday (May 9).

The names of Dr. Aatre and Mr. Shyama Raju were chosen from a list of 15 eminent personalities in various fields approved by the VTU Syndicate recently. The list was sent to the State government’s screening committee headed by K. Chidananda Gowda, former Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University, Shivamogga. Subsequently, the committee submitted its observations and recommended three names to the Raj Bhavan, which however, cleared the names of Dr. Aatre and Mr. Shyama Raju for the honours, official sources in Raj Bhavan told The Hindu on Wednesday.

Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu will be the chief guest and deliver convocation address on the occasion. Minister for Higher Education and Tourism R.V. Deshpande will be present.
