‘Urban flooding problems could exacerbate in city’

January 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - MYSURU:

Climate projections for Mysuru region suggest that the city may experience high-intensity, short-duration rainfall events, cautioned International Council for Local Environmental Issues (ICLEI), South Asia.

Over the next 20 to 30 years, such high-intensity rainfall events could increase flooding in low-lying areas of the city, Sunandan Tiwari, Deputy Director of ICLEI, South Asia Secretariat, told The Hindu , underlining the importance of improved management of the natural drainage channels in Mysuru city.

ICLEI, South Asia, has proposed to work with the Mysuru City Corporation to undertake a pre-feasibility study of an Integrated Drainage and Climate Change project for up to four watersheds in the city.

Earlier, inaugurating a day-long workshop on integrated drainage in the city, Mayor R. Lingappa emphasised the need to convert natural feeder canals supplying water to lakes and other water bodies into concrete storm water drains.
