UoM to seek conferment of Central university status

March 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - MYSURU:

The University of Mysore, which will celebrate its centenary in 2016, will seek Central university status from the government.

It will request the Central government through the State government to seek conferment of either central university status, or special status as a University of National Importance. The issue came before the Academic Council meeting held here on Friday and was approved by the Syndicate in its meeting on January 31. K.S. Rangappa, Vice-Chancellor, University of Mysore, pointed out that the university was the oldest in the State and the sixth oldest in the country.

Meanwhile, sources said that though the Ministry of HRD was approached in this connection, it was pointed out that the proposal has to be routed through the State government.

Hence the university will request the State government to move a resolution in the Assembly to get Central status for the University of Mysore.
