The University of Mysore has been ranked 36th and the JSS University, Mysuru, 45th among the universities in the country by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), which released the list in New Delhi on Monday.
The JSS Pharmacy College figures in the top 10 pharmacy colleges and retains the same ranking as in 2016, while JSS College of Pharmacy at Ootacamund run by the same management, is ranked 17th in the country this year.
The University of Mysore, which recently celebrated its centenary year, is also ranked 57th overall among all educational institutions encapsuling engineering colleges, management institutes, pharmacy colleges and universities that registered for the ranking for 2017.
Likewise, the JSS University is ranked 74th overall among all institutions.
Apart from these two, the National Institute of Engineering and Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering figure in the rank band of 101-150. In all, 1,007 engineering colleges participated in the MHRD exercise to be ranked among engineering colleges.
Dayanand Mane, in-charge Vice-Chancellor, University of Mysore, said there is an ongoing effort to break into the top 25 universities in the MHRD rank list and Mysore varsity has that potential. “But it may be difficult to compete with certain Central universities, which receive large funding. However, our research and publication record in the science field is very good but we are lagging in social sciences and will plan to cover the ground,” he said.
The India rankings follows a methodology approved by the National Institutional Ranking Framework approved by the MHRD.
The overall ranking of University of Mysore and JSS University within the top 100 is out of 774 institutions across the country that had agreed to be ranked under the overall category apart for ranking under specific discipline.
