One of the three victims of Tuesday morning assault at Thokkottu in Ullal police limits died of injuries at a private hospital here on Saturday. Police gave the name of the victim as Safvan.

Safvan (24), Saleem (22) and Nizam (22), working with a catering contractor, were on their way home from Mangaluru when they were allegedly attacked near Thokkottu junction in the wee hours of Tuesday. About five miscreants who came in two motorcycles allegedly waylaid the youth who were on a motorcycle and attacked them with lethal weapons.

Safvan, who had received deep cut injuries on his ribs, ran for help for about 1 km and later was admitted to a hospital in the city. The body was sent for post-mortem. He was a resident of Chembugudde in Thokkottu.

Motive?

The Mangaluru City Police on Friday arrested four persons in connection with Tuesday’s incidents, including the attack on Safvan, and had booked them for attempt to murder.

They were R. Rahul alias Back Rahul (20), a plumber; Pavan Raj (20), painter; Edwin Rahul D’ Souza alias Puchche Rahul (18), PU student; and Karthik (19), diploma student. The four also had allegedly attacked Safan (27), who works at Mangaluru Central Market, near his residence in Kallapu in Ullal police limits with sharp weapons on Tuesday afternoon.

Police Commissioner M. Chandra Sekhar said the assailants, all in their early 20s, did not personally know the victims. There appeared no strong reason behind the attacks even as the police claimed that they are attempting to go behind the incidents and see whether there were any other perpetrators.

Ullal police, who had registered attempt to murder case against the four assailants, have now added the charge of murder. The police have produced the accused before the jurisdictional magistrate seeking police custody.

Bandobast

Meanwhile, the police continued the bandobast arranged at Ullal and surrounding areas. About 600 personnel, including KSRP, KSSIF and civil police, have been deployed in Ullal since Tuesday to maintain law and order.

Prohibitor orders issued by the Commissioner under Section 144 of Code of Criminal Procedure too continues to be in force for some more days.
