BELAGAVI A Cabinet sub-committee led by Revenue Minister Kagodu Thimmappa will visit the villages to be rehabilitated for implementing the third phase of Upper Krishna Project on December 4 and 5 to assess the rate of compensation for land losers.

Announcing this while replying to a discussion in the Legislative Assembly on the third phase of the project, Water Resources Minister M.B. Patil said the government would take a decision on the compensation based on the recommendation of the Cabinet sub-committee.

The committee comprises Law Minister T. B. Jayachandra and Rural Development & Panchayat Raj Minister H.K. Patil.

The Minister said the project needed 1,33,867 acres of land. As many as 20 villages would get submerged as the project involves increasing the height of Almatti dam from the present 519 metres to 524.26 metres.

Earlier, members cutting across party affiliations expressed concern over the plight of some of the land losers in the UKP-I first phase who got a pittance as compensation. BJP member Govind Karjol demanded 10-year reservation in education for the wards of the land losers while all the members suggested that a special legislature session should be held to discuss exclusively the problems of north Karnataka including irrigation issues.
