February 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - RAICHUR:

Following the decision of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat during 81st Kannada Sahitya Sammelan in Shravanabelagola to hold the next one in Raichur, the district unit of the parishat has already begun preparations to ensure the smooth and systematic conduct of the sammelan.

Meeting

A delegation led by Mahantesh Maski, district president of the parishat, on Monday, met Minister of State for Medical Education and Raichur in-charge Sharan Prakash Patil, Raichur Lok Sabha member B.V. Naik, MLAs Pratapgowda Patil, Hampanagowda Badarli, Shivaraj Patil, MLC N.S. Boseraju, Tungabhadra Command Area Development Authority chairman A. Vasanth Kumar and Deputy Commissioner S. Sasikant Senthil. They held a preliminary discussion. Monday’s discussion primarily revolved around the venue. They resolved to hold the event at the grounds of University of Agricultural Science, Raichur (UAS).

Arrangements

Over 50,000 people are expected to turn up for the conference. “We need a huge ground for making arrangements for the main venue, parallel venues, parking, food serving, staying and other arrangements. UAS ground is an ideal place for it. As it is on the outskirts of the city and at the entry point, the people can directly come to the venue,” the delegation said. A meeting will be held with the Vice-Chancellor of UAS, Mr. Bheemanagowda Itagi, who was in the delegation, told The Hindu on Tuesday.

“We have received a good response from the district administration, Ministers and other elected representatives. We will soon gear up preparations,” Mahantesh Maski said. It was decided in the meeting to gear up the preparations in April end or in the first week of May, soon after the completion of school and college examinations as well as evaluations of papers.

The district unit of the parishat is keen on holding the sammelan before the completion of the term of the current elected body on November 3 this year.

The estimated cost for holding the sammelan is Rs. 5 crore. The district unit wants to bring it to Rs. 4 crore by cutting unnecessary costs. Around Rs. 50 lakh is expected to be collected from government servants, who usually donate one day’s salary for the sammelan. The remaining amount would have to be arranged from different sources including donations and government assistance. It was decided in Monday’s meeting to identify the donors and begin fund collection well in advance.

S. Sharanegowda, V.N. Akki, Ranganna Patil Allundi and others were part of the delegation. This would be third Kannada Sahitya Sammelan being conducted in Raichur. The earlier sammelanas were held in the city in 1934 and 1955.
