The State Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed two bills for enabling establishment of two private universities - Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara University and the Khaja Bandanawaz University - for increasing enrolment in higher education in the State.

Already there are 22 private universities in the State and of them 18 have been functioning, said Higher Education Minister Basavaraja Rayareddi.

He said Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Educational Society, Ujire, Dakshina Kannada, would establish one university. It would offer a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

The Khaja Bandanawaz Educational Society, Kalaburagi, would establish another University for imparting teaching, training, consultancy, research and development in science, social science, management and other subjects.

Aadhaar Bill

The House also passed the Karnataka Aadhaar (Targetted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Bill.

It aimed to ensure that subsidies, benefits, grants and services reach the intended beneficiaries; linking the use of Aadhaar identification for delivery of various subsidies and benefits; and ensuring good governance.

The Central government has already passed the Aadhaar Bill and it becomes an Act.
