Two students of Manipal Institute of Technology were killed when the motorcycle they were riding collided with a lamppost at Bannanje on Malpe-Manipal Road at midnight on Monday.

The Udupi Town police said on Tuesday that Nishant Yadav (21), a student of final year engineering, was riding a motorcycle that did not have a number place, with Sulatha Kamath, a student of Manipal Institute of Communication (MIC), as pillion, from Karavali Junction to Shiribeedu Junction on Malpe-Manipal Road. But the motorcycle collided against a lamppost after climbing the road divider near Hotel Ayan.

Nishant died on the spot while Sulatha, who was severely injured, was rushed to the Kasturba Hospital in Manipal where she was pronounced dead.

Nishant was from Bhopal while Sulatha was from Karkala. A case had been registered at the Udupi Town Police Station, the police said.

According to sources in Udupi Traffic Police, Sulatha had completed her education but she had to clear some subjects. Hence she had come to Manipal to clear the formalities to attend supplementary examination in November. Her parents were living in Sharjah.
