Two youth, Shafiullah and Sandeep, were injured when an elephant which got separated from its herd trampled upon them at Kallahatti village in Hiriyur taluk of Chitradurga district on Monday.
Shafiullah suffered a minor leg injury, while Sandeep’s condition is said to be critical. He is being treated at a government hospital in Hiriyur.
According to sources, two elephants got separated from their herd and were first spotted in Kallahatti village in the morning.
Out of fear, the local residents started throwing stones at the elephants in a bid to drive them away from the village. Shafiullah and Sandeep were also among the residents who were throwing stones at the elephants, when they were attacked.
Now, officials of the Forest Department, police officers, with the help of local residents, are making all possible efforts to send the elephants away into the forest area in Chennagiri where the herd of elephants is located.
Officials of the Bhadra forest area are also assisting in the efforts to drive the elephants back into the forest.
The officials, who are keeping track of the movement of the elephants through drones, are also trying to divert them into the forest by bursting crackers.
