Banking on ancient belief, farmers of two villages in the district on Thursday organised the age-old ritual of getting two frogs wedded to appease the rain god.
The district is reeling under severe drought and lakes across the district have gone dry. With the water level in the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) reservoir plummeting, farmers are losing their standing crops.
The farmers of Hosahalli and Ramanahalli in the district, severely affected by the delayed monsoon, got two frogs wedded amidst traditional rituals, while a few chanted shlokas and sang folk songs. While the elders made arrangements for the ceremony, a good number of children participated in it. They took out a procession with the “newly wed” frogs and distributed sweets.
“Whenever the monsoon is delayed, frogs and donkeys are wedded to appease Varuna (the rain god), the saviour of farmers. The villages are parched and we decided to conduct the frog wedding,” said Tulasiram, who witnessed the marriage.
Donkey marriage
On April 28 this year, the residents of Dodda Ankanahalli had performed the marriage of donkeys in their village.
