Activists of as many as 11 national-level trade unions, along with the Anganwadi Workers Association, the Janavadi Mahila Sanghatane among others, will take part in a national strike on September 2 to protest against the alleged anti-labour and anti-people policies pursued by the Union government.
Addressing a joint press conference here on Saturday, T.G. Vittal, Somashekar, A.R.M. Ismail, H. Adimurthy, J. Satyababu strongly condemned the policies of the Centre.
Benefit to corporates
They said that attempts to amend labour laws would only benefit capitalists and the corporate sectors and the working class would become bonded labourers and their rights to social security, pension and other benefits would be deprived.
Even the amendment to the Land Acquisition Act was yet another attempt to snatch away land from farmers only to be given to the corporate sector which would render the farmers and those depending on agriculture jobless besides threatening the food security too, they alleged.
Through the nation-wide strike, the trade unions would demand that Union government drop the move to amend Labour Laws, to withdraw acquisition bill, to stop the auction of coal mines for commercial purposes, to withdraw the ordinance on enhancing the share of Foreign Direct Investment in Insurance sector, etc. Road Transport Corporation buses would be off the road on September 2 and an appeal is being made to auto unions to support the strike.
