A tiger was found dead in the Kundkere range of Bandipur National Park on Sunday.

It was about 12 years old and authorities suspect it died of natural causes.

Heeralal, Conservator of Forests, said there were no traces of injuries on the animal’s body. Its skin and claws were intact but the postmortem report indicated that it had not consumed anything.

Life span

The life span of a tiger in the wild is about 11 to 13 years and hence the death has been attributed to natural causes.

Samples of the big cat’s viscera were collected and will be sent to the laboratory to ascertain the exact cause of the death, he said.

The carcass was later burnt and disposed off at the site in the presence of senior Forest Department officials and NGO representatives.

This was done as per the NTCA protocol.
