Three from Bangalore drown in Penna river channel

Three persons, including a 13-year-old girl, drowned in the Penna river channel at the Somasila dam in Anantasagaram mandal in Nellore district here on Sunday.

They were identified as Kanuvai Srinivasulu (32), his wife Nagaratnamma (28) and their relative Swathi (13). Srinivasulu was stated to be a businessman in Bangalore.

They arrived here for a marriage at Uppalapadu village in Anantasagaram mandal. After the marriage, they came to the dam with other relatives to relax near the water channels.

Nagaratnamma, who went into the river channel, suddenly began shouting for help. Her husband and the girl went to her rescue and as she clung to both of them, all the three got drowned in the deep waters.

The water depth is usually five to six ft in that area but the place where today’s tragedy struck was stated to be nearly 30 ft deep. And, there were no swimmers near the waters today. The bodies have been retrieved, said Anantasagaram Sub-Inspector of Police G. Pulla Rao.
