A 42-year-old debt-ridden farmer committed suicide by hanging himself to death from a tree at Kognoor village in Afzalpur taluk in Kalaburagi district on Tuesday.
The farmer was identified as Sharanabasappa Kolkur. The farmer had suffered extensive loss due to failure of crop on his 8 acres of land during the kharif and rabi seasons and was not in a position to repay the loan of Rs. 1.5 lakh he had taken from private moneylenders.
A case was registered at the Revoor Police Station. With this, the number of farmers committing suicide due to debts in the district rose to 34.
Jumps into quarry

In Kundgol taluk, a farmer reportedly upset over mounting debt committed suicide by jumping into a water-filled mining quarry near Hireharakuni village on Tuesday.
The farmer was identified as Iraiah Kallimath (65). The farmer owned 4.36 acres of land and had borrowed Rs. 2.40 lakh from Karnataka Vikas Grameen Bank. He had reportedly borrowed a hand-loan of Rs. 3 lakh. A buffalo he had reared also died recently. According to sources, Iraiah Kallimath had borrowed money last year for his daughter’s marriage and the crop failure had upset him.
In Bidar
Rishikesh Bahadur Desai reports from Bidar: A 30-year-old farmer committed suicide at Sindhankera village in Humnabad taluk on Tuesday. Revannasidappa Shivapuje had taken loans of up to Rs. 6 lakh from cooperative banks and private moneylenders, the police said.
