Tension at Nava Vrindavan

April 05, 2017 01:10 am | Updated 01:10 am IST - BALLARI

Sri Subhudendra Swamiji of Raghavendra Swamy Mutt, Mantralayam, performed rituals on Tuesday, being the first of the three-day aradhana festivities of Sri Kavindra Tirtha Swamiji at Nava Vrindavan, an island on the Tungabhadra.

Tension prevailed for sometime on the island during the rituals when the followers of Uttaradi Mutt and Raghavendra Swamy Mutt indulged in a verbal clash over performing the rituals. However, it was sorted out by the police who ensured that the situation did not go out of control.

According to information reaching here, both the mutts had respectively made arrangements for the rituals. Sri Subhudendra Swamiji and his followers arrived first and started the rituals. Sri Satyatma Tirtha Swamiji of Uttaradi Mutt did not turn up.

Nine vrindavans

There are nine vrindavans of yatis on the island. There is a running legal battle between the two mutts over the rights to perform the aradhana festivities, especially of three yatis — Padmanabha Tirtha, Kavindra Tirtha and Vageesha Tirtha — who were common to both the mutts, prior to the bifurcation of the mutts as Raghavendra Swamy Mutt and Uttaradi Mutt.

Moves court

It was also learnt that Uttaradi Mutt approached the High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday claiming rights to perform rituals for the remaining two days.
