The operation to rescue six-year-old Kaveri from the borewell at Jhunjarwad village in Belagavi district took more time than expected as the team members literally hit a rock when they thought they had almost reached the right spot.

For the team, that was confident of reaching Kaveri by noon, the rock came as a big challenge, further prolonging the rescue operation. Since it was not possible to pull the girl out from the borewell directly, a decision was taken to dig a parallel trench and then a horizontal tunnel to reach her. But, the hard rock posed a major operational hurdle.

Long process

The rescue team members at first used heavy machines to create a wider trench and then used only small and handy equipment to bore the horizontal tunnel. What should have ended by noon, dragged into evening and finally it was late in the night when they reached the spot where the girl was stuck.

Amid the prayers of innumerable people, the family members of Kaveri continued to have a long and painful wait.

Ever since Kaveri, the second child of daily wager Ajith Madar and Savita, fell into the open borewell on Saturday evening, the family has been inconsolable and their only prayer has been of getting her back alive.

Tense moments

As Savita had refused to eat, she fell sick frequently and had to be shifted to the government hospital, while the girl’s father waited at the site of rescue operation as several of relatives stood by him to lend a supporting hand.
