B. Sriramulu, MP, has directed the officials of the departments concerned to take up more works under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) to generate around one crore man-days during the current year.

Presiding over a meeting to review the progress of implementing Centrally-sponsored development schemes here on Monday, Mr. Sriramulu, while appreciating that the district had surpassed the target by generating 42.73 lakh man-days during the year 2016-17, pointed out that there was scope for generating more number of man-days.

“There are 1.04 lakh families with job cards seeking employment while only 42.73 lakh man-days had been generated. There is lot of scope to provide employment to more number of people by taking up more number of works,” he said.

Mr. Sriramulu also suggested that the officials should specify the number of works proposed to be executed for the year. He also wanted the officials of various departments to create awareness among the public about the works proposed under MGNREGA so that the purpose of the scheme was served.

Deputy Commissioner Ramprasath Manohar said that the district has been ranked number two as far as generating man-days was concerned and instructed the officials to prepare a realistic action plan for the year and complete it.

Mr. Sriramulu and Koppal MP Karadi Sanganna, who was also present, wanted the Deputy Commissioner to submit a proposal to the Karnataka Mining Environment Restoration Corporation to include removal of silt from the Tungabhadra dam by using of funds mobilised from the sale proceeds of iron ore sold through e-auction.

According to them, removing of silt was essential to increase the capacity of the dam, to which Mr. Ramprasath responded positively.
