Sugarcane growers plan to lay siege to Suvarna Soudha

December 04, 2014 02:32 am | Updated April 07, 2016 02:35 am IST - MYSURU:

The Sugarcane Farmers’ Association of Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts have resolved to lay siege to the Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi, where the winter session is scheduled to begin on December 9.

At a meeting of the association here on Wednesday, sugarcane growers decided to gather at the Suvarna Soudha to press for their demands, which include nationalisation of sugar mills that have failed to honour the High Court’s directive to pay growers their dues.

Sugar mills in the State owe growers Rs. 2,100 crore in dues for sugarcane procured for crushing last year, president of the Karnataka Sugarcane Farmers’ Association Kurubur Shanthakumar alleged in a statement here.

The growers took serious exception to the State government’s “failure” to put pressure on the sugar mills to pay them (growers).
