A study on traffic problems in Mysuru’s Central Business District (CBD) — taken up by Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) — was launched here on Wednesday.
Deputy Commissioner D. Randeep launched the study at his office in the presence of many MGP members, including president S.D. Saokar, Bhamy V. Shenoy, R. Chandraprakash, P.M. Bhat, Bapu Satyanarayana, Srimathi, and others.
The areas comprising the Fort area, Makkaji Chowk, Doddapete, Santhepete, and Shivaramapete are reckoned to be the commercial hub of Mysuru and are described the CBD in the city’s Master Plan, will be covered in the study. Traffic congestion is rapidly increasing in these areas and if urgent steps are not taken, we will have traffic gridlocks everywhere very soon, the MGP felt.
Track doubling and six laning of highway between Mysuru and Bengaluru will encourage overflow from Bengaluru and exacerbate the traffic problems, it added. To formulate a plan to prevent this disaster, one needs an in-depth study of the various aspects of traffic congestion in these areas. Previous studies are either out-of-date or not available to the public, according to R. Chandraprakash, past president, MGP.
The Mysore-Nanjangud Master Plan is a land use plan and does not delve into the causes of traffic congestion. MGP proposes to fill this lacuna, he added.
The area to be taken up for the study is a rectangle whose corners are the Railway Station, Ramaswamy Circle, Gun House, and Suburban Bus Stand.
Teachers and students of various engineering colleges will be asked to carry out traffic surveys. MGP will meet with all the stakeholders such as elected representatives, Police Department, district administration, MCC, MUDA, Railways, RTO, KSRTC, autorickshaw associations, chambers of commerce, hotel owners’ association, among others in this regard.
It has proposed to complete the study by May 2018.
The Deputy Commissioner, after launching the study, asked the MGP to come out with short-term, medium-term, and long-term measures, and promised to extend support for the study.
