The State government is “examining” a report submitted by former IAS officer Vinay Kumar regarding irregularities in prison as alleged by former Deputy Inspector-General (Prisons) D. Roopa.

The report was submitted at the end of October to the Secretariat, said Mr. Kumar. The retired officer was asked to probe the allegations made by Ms. Roopa against Director-General of Police (Prisons) H.N.S. Rao and others for accepting a bribe of ₹2 crore to provide special facilities to Tamil Nadu politician V.K. Sasikala.

The sensational report generated nation-wide outrage.

Rao’s report

Mr. Rao, on the other hand, submitted a report to the government alleging that there was ill will between prison officials and Ms. Roopa over division of work between senior officers in the department.

The government then directed Mr. Kumar to probe the allegations. While Ms. Roopa has since been transferred as DIG, Commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety, Mr. Rao has retired.

The officer, however, refused to divulge details of the report, saying it was up to the State government to accept recommendations and approve it.

Confirmation

Subash Chandra, Home Secretary, confirmed that the report had been submitted and was being examined.

During a recent interaction with mediapersons, Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy said after perusal, the report and its recommendations will be forwarded to the Cabinet for action.
