Minister for Energy, Food and Civil Supplies Shobha Karandlaje has called upon establishments and households to start using LEDs and CFLs to conserve power at a time when the State is facing a crisis on this front.
She was addressing the gathering at the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) here on Monday after distributing prizes to winners of the Dasara illumination competitions.
Even if the State initiated power generation projects now, it would take at least three more years to enjoy the benefits. Hence, conserving power was important. One unit of power saved was equal to two units of power generated, she said.
Lauding the Managing Director of CESC, P. Bore Gowda, for his initiative in seeking sponsors to illuminate various roads and circles in the city for Dasara, she said it had saved about Rs. 1.5 crore. More than 35 firms had sponsored lighting arrangements in the city during the Dasara celebrations. Thanking the sponsors, Ms. Karandlaje said that more such innovative ways to seek the assistance of sponsors should be sought to reduce the Government's expenditure during Dasara.
Mr. Gowda stated that sponsors had given an overwhelming response to Dasara illumination. Against the 2.88 lakh units power consumed during the celebrations in the previous years, only 1.72 lakh units were consumed this year.
The first prize for road illuminations went to Sayyaji Rao Road, which was decked up by about 11 establishments from Mysore, Bangalore, Tumkur, Sagar, Hubli and Dharwad. The second prize was bagged by D. Devaraja Urs Road while Iriwin Road got the third prize. Chamundi Hill Road got the special prize.
In the ‘Circle' category, Millennium Circle, Tipu Circle, Fountain Circle and Five Light Circle shared the first prize while the second prize went to Hardinge Circle.
