The Shivamogga City Corporation has launched a scheme to provide free breakfast to its civic workers.
Currently, 550 civic workers are employed with the corporation of which 410 of them are on contract. Most of them serve from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. A meeting of the corporation on June 29 had taken a decision to provide breakfast for them.
The meeting was attended by the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor and the presidents of Standing Committees
Deputy Mayor H. Palakshi told The Hindu that the funds reserved in the annual budget of the corporation for the welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes would be used for the purpose.
The corporation is likely to incur Rs. 40 lakh expense annually for the scheme, he said.
The corporation had planned to hand over the responsibility of providing food for the civic workers to caterers. The tender in this regard would be floated soon.
According to terms and conditions of the contract, the catering firm should provide breakfast to the workers between 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the ward in which they serve, he said.
The scheme was launched by Shivamogga MLA K.B. Prasanna Kumar at a programme held here on Saturday.
Mayor Mangala Annappa, Commissioner A.R. Ravi were present.
The corporation has also provided three-wheeler scooters for 62 persons with physical disabilities.
Mr. Kumar also handed over the vehicles to the beneficiaries on the occasion.
