Connoisseurs of art are in for a cultural treat with the performance of some of ‘Sannaata’, ‘Bylaata’ and ‘Parijatha’ shadow leather puppetry, which are on the verge of extinction.

As many as nine plays would be staged during the two-day ‘Yakshagana and Byalaata Ranga Sambhrama’ organised by the Karnataka Yakshagana and Bylaata Academy at Raghava Kala Mandir here beginning from March 29.

“Sannata, ‘Bylaata’ ‘Parijatha’ and Shadow leather Puppetry form of art, though ancient, were not popular in the present day compared to ‘Yakshagana’ and are a dying art. This is mainly because of encouragement and support from the people for ‘Yakshagana’. In an attempt to rejuvenate the dying art forms, the Academy had organised ‘Ranga Sambhrama’ with thrust on these art forms and also to reintroduce them to the connoisseurs of the present day”, Mr. Belagal Veeranna, Chairman of the Academy, said.

Speaking to press persons here on Thursday, Mr. Veeranna said that Ranga Sambhrama has been launched and it is being held in as many as 18 districts in the State. “With limited budget, the Academy had been projecting all the five forms in a bid to revive them besides helping the troupes to get some remuneration,” he said.

The programme in Ballari would be inaugurated by ‘Nadoja’ Ms. Padmamma, a senior ‘Bylaata’ exponent.
