The Brahmashri Narayanaguru Billavara Seva Sangha, Kokkarne, has condemned the brutal killing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member, Praveen Poojary, at Kenjur village.
Activists of Hindu Jagrana Vedike allegedly assaulted Praveen Poojary (29) and another person Akshaya Devadiga (20) at Kenjur village near Hebri alleging that they were carrying cows to a slaughterhouse on Wednesday night. Praveen Poojary died of injuries at Mahesh Hospital in Brahmavar.
Addressing presspersons here on Friday, K. Bhaskar Poojary, president of the sangha, said that there should be a thorough probe into the matter and the guilty should be punished. Praveen Poojary was a simple person and general secretary of the sangha. He also had a general store, a poultry farm and a toddy shop. He owned a three-wheeler.
He said that someone had deliberately called Praveen Poojary on Wednesday night and sought his van for hire and then killed him brutally. The sangha, with jurisdiction over members of the Billava community in 14 villages, condemned the killing and wanted an impartial probe into the matter.
The sangha complimented the police for taking quick action in the matter and rushing to the aid of Praveen Poojary and Akshaya Devadiga immediately after they learnt of the assault.
It also lauded the police for arresting those involved in the crime. The government should provide compensation to the family of Praveen Poojary. It should take stern action against the so-called cow protectors, Mr. Bhaskar Poojary said.
Dharna
Members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a dharna in front of the Clock Tower here on Friday. Balakrishna Shetty, general secretary of the district unit of CPI(M), said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently warned against so-called cow protectors. Members of a right wing group had killed a BJP member, Praveen Poojary, at Kenjur. But in this case, it had been impossible to make out who the real and the so-called cow protectors were.
The right wing groups would do well to remember that as agriculture was declining in the district, people had no alternative but to sell their old cows and oxen, he said.
K. Shankar, CPI(M) leader, said that the right wing groups were behaving as if there was no law and order machinery in the district. Killing a human being in the name of a cow was abominable.
The Sangh Parivar was treating human beings as inferior to cows. The way things were going, it would not be surprising if the Sangha Parivar outfits started fighting among themselves, he said.
Admar Sripathi Acharya, H. Narasimha, Vittal Poojary, P. Vishwanath Rai, Suresh Kalagara and Sujatha, Nalini, CPI(M) leaders, were present.
