Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil S. speaking during a review meeting for monsoon preparedness at Deputy Commissioner’s office in Mangaluru on Monday.

Taking stock of monsoon preparedness in the district, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada Sasikanth Senthil S. on Monday asked tahsildars to set up control rooms in taluk headquarters immediately for effective coordination and delivery of relief measures.

Chairing a meeting here, he said that sea erosion, flooding, spread of epidemics and landslips are the primary concerns for which mitigative measures should be taken through micro planning.

He asked MESCOM officials to keep the district control room (number 1077) informed about power cuts or other damage to the power distribution network due to any monsoon-related incidents. The Deputy Commissioner said that MESCOM should also inform about the time required to repair such affected facilities or to restore power supply.

The Deputy Commissioner asked all officials to receive calls on their mobile phones and respond to complaints, if any.

He asked tahsildars, officials of Public Works Department and urban local bodies to identify areas prone to flooding and landslips and take steps to protect them.

Health officials should press their field-level staff for taking up immediate preventive measures to contain the spread of epidemics, especially cholera, malaria and dengue. Awareness on preventive measures should be created among people in the ground-level, he said.

The Deputy Commissioner asked Home Guards to submit their requirement for equipment. He said that they should have a public address system to alert visitors on various beaches about the dangers of getting into sea during monsoon.

A Home Guard official said that there is a need for tents for Home Guards on duty on beaches.

Mr. Senthil asked the police to prevent unnecessary gathering of people during relief operations. Roads leading to such affected places should be cordoned off to ensure smooth movement of Fire and Emergency Services personnel or other government vehicles required in relief measures.

Mohammed Nazir, Commissioner, Mangaluru City Corporation, said that a gang of workers has been allocated to each ward in the city to attend to immediate works. A task force would be set up in the corporation which would be active from June to September.
