“Natural resources no longer define power now. It is knowledge that bestows power. Similiarly, leadership is no longer defined by commanding. Leadership is now more about empowering and coaching. Seniority is not defined by age. Creativity defines seniority.”

Golden jubilee

These were among the inspiring words of the former President A.P.J Abdul Kalam, who addressed a large gathering of students and faculty members at the valedictory of Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering’s (SJCE) golden jubilee celebrations here on Tuesday.

Dr. Kalam called upon the students and teachers to develop a Culture of Excellence driven by innovation and creativity.

‘Citizen of earth’

The former President sought to promote the concept of “citizen of earth” by drawing from a social media message he received from an Indian youth working in South Korea.

Referring to the message he received from P. Subramanian, a 28-year-old Indian working in South Korea, Dr. Kalam said human beings, when they land on Mars, will be united by the citizenship of earth on their passport.

Human beings are united by a common identity of humanity, Dr. Kalam said, urging the youth to transcend the borders of religions and regions.
