Seed potato: farmers seek lower prices

May 10, 2014 11:35 am | Updated 11:35 am IST - Hassan:

The district unit of the Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha here on Friday staged a protest demanding reduction in price fixed for seed potato.

The district administration, after consultations with merchants, fixed the price in the range of Rs. 1,900 to Rs. 2,000 per quintal.

The protesters said the price fixed was too high. Farmers in distress due to continuous drought and loss of yield could not afford to invest so much on seed potato. The district administration should consider their difficulties and reduce the price to Rs. 1,500 per quintal. They also demanded the district administration supervise the sale of seed potato.

Sangha district convener H.R. Naveen Kumar led the protest.
