Bringing relief to thousands of students who had qualified for counselling after the Postgraduate Entrance Test (PGET) for medical admissions, the government has announced that a second round of counselling will be held for them soon.
Last date extended
This comes after Supreme Court extended the last date for admissions (which was earlier May 31) by nearly a month, said Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil, speaking during a press conference to announce the results of the Common Entrance Test (CET).
As many as 7,548 students qualified for medical counselling, while 1,081 qualified for dental counselling through the PGET conducted by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.
Delay
The PGET counselling procedure had been delayed after the State government and private college managements failed to arrive at a consensus regarding seat sharing. As the Supreme Court had set May 31 as the deadline for completion of PG medical admissions, the government was compelled to follow the seat sharing ratio and fee structure of the previous academic year because of paucity of time. Consequently, counselling, which was earlier scheduled for May 23, was postponed to May 26.
Had there not been extension of the last date for admissions, many seats could have fallen vacant, said an RGUHS official.
