About 200 eminent acoustic scientists from across the country have gathered at the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), here to participate in the annual symposium of Acoustical Society of India – Acoustics 2014 organised on the theme “Acoustics for better speech”.
The event aims to have a deep insight on the acoustic activities in the country and trigger future research activities in the field.
Dr. Vishwa Mohan Katoch, Secretary, Department of Health Research and Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi inaugurated the symposium at Knowledge Park in AIISH campus.
He pointed out in his speech that the government should develop a plan for effective utilisation of the research expertise. Dr. Katoch said the services offered by AIISH to improve the quality of life of persons with communication disorders had drawn appreciation at the national level.
Dr. V.K. Aatre, former scientific adviser to the Defence Minister and former Director General of DRDO, who was the chief guest, said India is trying to become a world power from the last decade.
“To achieve that, we should become an economic power. To become an economic power we should have knowledge power,” he observed.
The eminent scientist urged the Acoustical Society of India to take a lead role in making the people more sensitive to noise pollution.
Dr. S.R. Savithri, Director, AIISH and Dr. V. Rajendran, President, Acoustical Society of India (ASI) were also present.
Sixty five research papers from areas such as speech acoustics, sound perception, bioacoustics, vibro-acoustics, hydro-acoustics, physical acoustics, building and environmental acoustics, musical acoustics, under water acoustics, instrumentation and signal processing are being presented at the symposium.
