Samiti unearths duplication of road works in Raichur

May 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - RAICHUR:

Hyderabad Karnataka Horata Samiti (HKHS) said that Raichur City Municipal Council (CMC) has paid the contractors who had repaired and strengthened city roads only on paper. Addressing a media conference at Reporters’ Guild here recently, HKHS vice-president Dr. Razak Ustad released a document that he obtained under the Right to Information Act to establish his allegation.

According to the document, the duplication of work is done on the road stretches between the Deputy Commissioner’s residence and Rampur Road via Nijalingappa Colony, Chandrabanda Circle and Ashraya Colony, Raichur and Ashapur Road, CMC Commissioner’s residence and Maremma Temple, Arab Mohalla, Chaitanya Hospital, Theen Kandeel Circle and Hanuman Theatre.

“We have found six cases where a same stretch in a road is repaired and strengthened under two or more schemes in the last two years. A road stretch that was repaired and strengthened six months ago under one scheme was again repaired and strengthened under another scheme. In one scheme, the stretch is shown as from point A to B, in another scheme, the same stretch is shown as from point B to A,” he said. In some cases, he added, the CMC has given contract to strengthen longer stretches of roads, which included the recently-strengthened shorter stretches.

He blamed the nexus between corrupt CMC officials and contractors for the duplication of road strengthening works. He demanded that the Deputy Commissioner get an enquiry conducted about all the road works done in the last ten years.
