Rs. 770 crore Central aid sought for drought relief

State has sought Rs. 362-crore relief for flood-affected districts

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday urged the Union government to release Rs. 770 crore to take up relief works in 34 drought-hit taluks in the State.

After meeting with a Central study team, Mr. Siddaramaiah told presspersons that Revenue Minister V. Srinivas Prasad had submitted a memorandum to the Union government seeking an aid of Rs. 770 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund.

The Central team, led by K.K. Pathak, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, visited flood-hit areas in the State a few days ago. Floods in districts such as Bidar, Gulbarga, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal, Bellary, Gadag, Bagalkot and Dharwad had claimed 24 lives. Rains had affected standing crops on over 88,000 hectares and 3,680 km of roads were damaged.

The State had sought Rs. 362-crore relief for flood-affected districts.

Session

Mr. Siddaramaiah said the winter session of the State legislature would be held in Belgaum in the second week of December.
