Residents in areas around many lakes in the city are anxious as the water levels are threatening to cross the danger mark. Sunday saw Yelahanka lake overflow, flooding nearby buildings. This came a day after Begur lake near Electronics City overflowed on Saturday night, flooding over 800 houses around. Fortunately, however, the lake bunds have not breached.

With water levels in many lakes reaching alarming levels, prediction of heavy rain over the next two days has brought back fears of a situation like last year when a breach in Hulimavu and Madiwala lakes inundated large parts of south-east Bengaluru.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials said more rain is likely to cause overflow in most lakes in south-east and north Bengaluru.

Nearing the danger mark are Jakkur and Rachenahalli lakes in the north and Somasundara Palya, Hulimavu, Madiwala, Bellandur and Varthur lake series in the south-east, said K.V. Ravi, executive engineer (lakes), BBMP.

Lake conservation activists also said that parts of Ballari Road are likely to be flooded if the Yelahanka lake series overflows. Meanwhile, differences prevailed over the management of the Hulimavu-Madiwala series of lakes, which when breached last year affected HSR Layout, Silk Board Junction, Koramangala and Anugraha Layout. BBMP Commissioner N. Manjunath Prasad said while Madiwala lake was already filled to the brim, water inlets into Agara Lake, next in the series, had been blocked causing concerns of floods.
