Seeking release of water from the Narayanpur reservoir into the Left Bank Canal till April 15, farmers and members of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha staged a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s Office here on Wednesday.

Hundreds of farmers, led by Mallikarjun Satyampet, State secretary of KRRS, expressed displeasure over the officials not making any effort to release water to save the withering crops and ensure better yields.

Farmers have been facing drought for the last two years and many, who were unable to bear crop loss due to shortage of rainfall and repay bank loans, have committed suicide.

Therefore, officials have to take immediate action to release water enabling farmers get a good yield and help them recover from crop loss, Mr. Satyampet said.

If the government does not consider their demand, they would stage agitations and rallies, the protesters warned.

Later, they submitted a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to the Deputy Commissioner.

Umesh Mudnal, Ayyanna Halabhavi, Hanumanth Kongandi, Shivayogi and others were present.
