Beginning the process of translating the State Cabinet’s decision, of granting religious minority status to Lingayats and Veerashaiva Lingayats who believe in Basavanna’s ideology, into action, the State government issued a notification on Thursday.

The status will come into effect only from the date of the Centre accepting the recommendation in this regard and notifying it.

The State’s notification has been issued under Section 2 (D) of the Karnataka State Minorities Commission Act 1994. Now a recommendation will have to be made to the Centre to grant the status by notifying under Section 2 C of the National Minorities Commission Act 1992.

Law Minister T.B. Jayachandra told reporters in Bengaluru that the recommendation is likely to be made in about a week. The legal wetting of the recommendation had been completed, he added.
