Off-seasonal rain accompanied by gusty wind created havoc in Yadgir district on Wednesday night.

A man lost his life and two were injured in the rain and gusty wind in Rayanapalya village in Kodekal Revenue Circle in Surpur taluk of the district.

The dead was identified as Hanumantharai Doddaholiyappa Bhangi (60) of Hanumasagar village in Surpur taluk.

“He died after stones kept on the tin-sheet roof of the house fell on him,” Tahsildar of Surpur Suresh Ankalagi told The Hindu over phone. The injured, Basappa, son of Hanumantarai Bhangi, and Kariyappa, have been shifted to hospital. However, Kariyappa was referred to Bagalkot for further treatment.

Tin-sheet roofs on 200 houses in Rayanapalya, Dasaragot, Jumalpur and Kadadarahal village in Surpur taluk were blown away in the gusty wind. Four houses, three in Rayanapalya and one in Wadgera Revenue Circle, partially collapsed.

As many as five head of sheep were killed in rain-related incidents.

Several trees and electricity poles were uprooted. In Kodekal Revenue Circle in Surpur taluk, electricity poles were uprooted after age-old trees fell on them, reports said.

GESCOM officials are on the field to restore power supply which remained disrupted in several villages since Wednesday night, senior officials of the power company said in Yadgir.

Officials are conducting a survey on crop damage, if any, Chatana Patil, Joint Director of Agriculture Department, said.

Officials of the Statistical Department said that the rain gauge in Hattikuni has recorded the highest rainfall of 22.02 mm, while the lowest was 1.4 mm in Hunsagi in Surpur taluk.
