The race to secure an MBBS or BDS seat for students from Karnataka has become tougher as they will have to battle it with those from across the country who have qualified the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).
With nearly 4.09 lakh candidates from across the country qualifying the first-ever NEET held in two phases this year, the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK) has seen a surge in applications for counselling.
The consortium, which, until last year would conduct its own exam, is making admissions to its member colleges using NEET scores this time.
Though the COMEDK did receive applications from students outside Karnataka earlier too, there has been a steep increase in demand this year. In just three days after the online application for medical and dental seats was open, the consortium received 14,512 applications for 1,400 seats. Last year, around 6,000 students attended counselling for approximately the same number of seats.
