The pulse polio vaccination programme, to administer the vaccine to 3.32 lakh targeted children between the age group of zero and five years, was launched in the district on Sunday.

According to a press statement issued by Department of Health and Family Welfare here on Sunday, the vaccination programme was held at various booths set up across the district between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. for children below the age of five.

From January 19 to 21, the health workers will visit each house of the district to administer the vaccine to the children that left on first day at the booth.

The release said that Vijayapura district had 4,31,107 houses which had 3,32,030 children between the age group of zero and five. Of them, 23,40,681 children were in rural areas while 91,341 children were in urban areas.

The target is to make the vaccine available to every child to prevent polio from affecting the child.

A total of 1,219 vaccination centres and 44 transit teams had been set up in the district. Around 1,159 teams of health workers had been set up to visit each home for vaccination.

Some 2,578 volunteers had been deployed for the job, 255 supervisors and 129 vehicles are being used for the task, the release said.

The department had urged people to make sure their children received the vaccination.

Even if the children were recently vaccinated, the parents were urged to get the vaccine administered again, the release added.
