Prohibitory orders under Section 144 have been clamped at Nanjangud about 24 km from the city following tension during immersion of Ganesha idol on Friday night. Tension gripped the place after arguments between two groups of people over an alleged incident of stone hurling, police sources said.

In a bid to diffuse tension, the police took 40 people into custody and completed the immersion ceremony at Hullali canal at dawn on Saturday.

The prohibitory orders will be in place till 10 p.m. on Saturday. Additional police personnel have been deployed at places of worship of all communities and senior officials including Superintendent of Police Mr.Abhinav Khare, visited the town. The situation is under control and neither the pilgrim traffic to the temple town nor commercial activities, has been affected.
