A bus carrying employees of a private company was gutted in an accidental fire on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway, near Kolli Circle, in Maddur at 2 a.m. on Thursday.

Passengers escaped unhurt as the alert driver forced them to get down immediately after noticing thick smoke from the battery box, said the Maddur police.

The private bus was ferrying around 40 people, all employees of a factory near Bidadi, to Mandya. Three fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames. Technical snag is said to be the reason for the fire.
