Preparations on for GP polls

Notification to be issued on May 15

Preparations have begun for the election to 263 gram panchayats in the district, Deputy Commissioner V.P. Ikkeri has said.

The model code of conduct would be in force from May 10 to June 7. According to the schedule announced by the State Election Commission, the notification for the election will be issued on May 15. The last date to file nomination is May 22.

Nominations would be scrutinised on May 23 and May 25 would be the last date for their withdrawal. Polling would be held on June 2 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., while counting of votes would be held on June 5, he said a meeting of district-level officials here on Wednesday.

In wake of the announcement of the election schedule, official vehicles for presidents and vice- presidents of zilla panchayats, taluk panchayats and Agriculture Produce Marketing Committees have been taken back. City corporations, city municipal councils, town municipal councils and town panchayats have been exempted from the model code of conduct. The Election Commission has not imposed any restriction on conducting cultural programmes and conventions.

Chief Executive Officer of Shivamogga Zilla Panchayat B. Ramu directed booth-level election officers to begin the verification of electoral rolls. Preparations for setting up polling booths should commence immediately, he said.
