Pre-litigation mediation should be the foremost priority of police officers and advocates whenever family related cases come to them, District Principal and Sessions judge M. Ramesh Rao has said.

Inaugurating a workshop on police officials and advocates here on Saturday, he suggested that the police and advocates try their best to sort out disputes between couples through mediation rather than allowing them to file cases.

“It is a pity that the number of litigation in family courts is increasing by the day. In most cases, it is noticed that the young couple grow differences over pity issues and opt for legal action due to lack of proper and timely advice. Therefore, whenever a couple approaches the police and the advocates, they should review the cases, know the facts and try to solve the issues through mediation at the primary level.

“If the officials allow the parties to file cases, lengthy legal procedure will spoil mental peace and harmony in the family. It is necessary to prevent divorce in the larger interests of the society,” Mr. said.
