Political leaders urged to take united stand

April 17, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - BELAGAVI:

The district Bharatiya Janata Party has called for a united stand by leaders of all political parties to convince the State and the Union governments to establish an Indian Institute of Technology either at Belagavi or Dharwad, which would help to reduce the regional imbalances in north Karnataka.

Ironically, this callhas come five days after the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that Raichur, Hubballi-Dharwad and Mysuru would be recommended to the centre for the proposed IIT.

BJP district president Eranna Kadadi said here on Thursday that Mr. Siddaramaiah throwing his lot behind his home district Mysuru could not be ruled out. Therefore, it was high time that leaders and people of north Karnataka join hands and take up to issue so that they do not miss a great opportunity to have a prestigious institution like IIT in the region, which would help further development and progress of the region and its people. He said the State government established Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, at a cost of Rs. 400 crore, as the second seat of State power in Belagavi in 2012.

But, except for the Winter Sessions of the Legislature and occasional review meetings by various Legislature committees and Ministers, this structure has been under-utilised.

He added that the government had been ignoring the need to shift some of the departments more relevant to north Karnataka.

This comes five days after the Chief

Minister recommended three cities
