The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has set a goal of making the zone 3 area a model green zone by expanding the green coverage, Assistant Commissioner Santosh Anishettar has said.

Inaugurating a special campaign to plant 1,000 trees at Sampige Nagar and on BCM Hostel premises in Dharwad on Sunday, he said that the afforestation drive would be taken up throughout the year. Saplings would be planted at Sampige Nagar, Vikas Nagar, Doddanayakanakopp and surrounding areas.

Adopting trees

Meanwhile, the residents of Rajatagiri celebrated the day by voluntarily stepping forward to adopt saplings and took a pledge that they would nurture them like “their friends and children”.

Those who came to participate in a function at the newly constructed garden at Rajatagiri coming under ward number 19 in Dharwad, adopted more than 50 saplings which were planted inside the garden.

The construction of a garden on HDMC land was mooted by councillor Shaila Kamaraddi.

Though this land was reserved for a garden, for several years, this project did not take wings.

However, Ms. Shaila made efforts to see that the project got funds from the HDMC and the works began eight months ago.

Fencing and leveling of the land took more than four months and the other civil works were completed on war footing to ensure that this garden is dedicated to the society on the World Environment Day.
